British Kid's Saturday in 1977 — from Pocket Money to Bath Night

Saturday the fifteenth of October 1977, told from the height of a nine-year-old. The adults had the rest of the week. This one day belonged to us. We follow it through, hour by hour. Up before the house at seven with the Open University on BBC One. Swap Shop and a phone number nobody could get through on, then the Tiswas argument that in 1977 only the Midlands and a few other ITV regions could actually have. Ten pence from Dad, the phone box on the corner, the jars on the shelf and the comic rack by the door. The errand to the chippy for dinner, then jumpers for goalposts on the rec with the Choppers and Grifters lying in the grass. At four, Big Daddy on World of Sport from Skegness. At five, the classified results on the radio and the pools coupon checked in silence. Just after six, Doctor Who with K Nine a week old, then Bruce Forsyth in his last series of The Generation Game. Bath night in after your brother, an annual by torchlight, and Sunday still to come.
