This song, SAMBA, is a story of a man who travelled from the far east of Senegal to our village, Foni-Sintet, looking for some work. Luckily for him, my family offered him the job as a shepherd. He was with us for 15 years, looking over our family cattle. During his stay with my family, Samba was like an uncle to me. He cared for me, advised me, taught me how to be a good man, taught me how to love animals, amongst other things. Every morning Samba will wake me up from bed to go with him to the cattle field to milk the cows. After milking the cows, we will have some of that fresh milk for breakfast, before heading to the bush with the cows to help them graze the greener pastures. This was our morning routine When he left for his village, it was without my knowledge. I remember waking up that morning without his usual tricks to wake me up. I rushed to his hut only to find it empty. After being told that SAMBA went back home, I can still feel the sadness that came over me. I felt the loneliness and emptyness immediately.
