"Bella ciao" or "Goodbye beautiful" is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by workers protesting the harsh working conditions in the paddy fields of Northern Italy. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem for Italian resistance movements by the partisans who opposed Nazism and fascism, and fought against the occupying forces of Nazi Germany between 1943 and 1945. Versions of "Bella ciao" continue to be sung worldwide as a hymn of freedom and resistance.
I previously released an original Italian-language cover on my 2022 EP "Working Folk," but I think it only beneficial to share an English version—one that can resonate with a broader audience who might otherwise overlook this powerful composition and its enduring message of resistance against fascist ambition, wherever it may rear its ugly and malicious head. The lyrics are my own adaptation of a loose translation by Paddy Shannon.

Woke up one morning, and there were soldiers
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Woke up one morning, and there were soldiers
The invasion had begun

O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Lend me your shoulder, we’ll stand together
But I feel my time has come
And if I die here, for the resistance
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
And if I die here, for the resistance
You must lay me in my grave
Among the flowers, up on the mountain
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao,
Among the flowers, up on the mountain
Let me rest among the brave
Some day the people will pick the flowers
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao,
Some day the people will pick the flowers
And they will remember my name
This is the flower of the resistance
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
This is the flower of the resistance
And those who died for liberte
