Its prefectural capital, Jinghong (景洪), stands beside the Lancang River (澜沧江), the name used for the Mekong within China. The region is home to Dai, Hani, Lahu, Jinuo, Bulang and other communities whose cultures share close links with neighboring Southeast Asia. Dai traditions and Theravada Buddhist influences are especially visible in local temples, decorative motifs and festivals. Gaozhuang Xishuangjing (告庄西双景) is a modern cultural-tourism district on the Lancang riverfront. Its name means “Nine Pagodas and Twelve Villages,” and its streets combine Dai-inspired design with broader Southeast Asian influences. At its center, Jinghong Golden Pagoda provides the district’s best-known landmark; nearby Starlight Night Market fills with food, crafts, performances and visitors after sunset.
