When the grid goes down, you do not need a $15,000 battery wall bolted to your garage. You need to know where your power really goes, and how to stop wasting it.
In February 2021, more than four million homes and businesses in Texas lost power during a winter storm. More than 1,400 people ended up in emergency rooms with carbon monoxide poisoning, many of them trying to stay warm the wrong way. The families who came through safe were not the ones who spent the most. They were the ones who knew the simple tricks.
In this video, Walt Calloway counts down 25 cheap, proven ways to get through a blackout:
🔋 Keep phones and devices alive for days with power banks, your car and that old laptop in the closet
💡 Light your home without candles, using garden solar lights and a simple water-jug lantern
🔥 Stay warm without power using the one-room retreat, a tent in the living room and the hot water bottle
🧊 Save the food in your fridge and freezer with the closed-door rule, frozen jugs, dry ice and the penny trick
⚡ Use a car battery, an inverter and a hybrid car safely, plus the generator mistake that can kill a lineman
☀️ Find out why most rooftop solar panels shut off in a blackout, and what to ask your installer
🛠️ Build your own home backup for a fraction of the price
Number 10 costs one penny and tells you a truth your freezer will try to hide. Number 3 is about the solar panels already sitting on millions of American roofs.
⚠️ Safety first: never run a generator, grill, camp stove or car inside your home or garage. Keep generators at least 20 feet from the house, and put a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm on every sleeping floor. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Use a transfer switch or interlock kit installed by a licensed electrician.
