The Great Pyramid rises from a sun-baked plateau on the edge of Cairo, yet the Nile lies about five miles away, hidden behind apartment blocks and highways. Four and a half thousand years ago, boats loaded with gleaming white limestone pulled up almost to its base. So if a river built the greatest symbol of the desert, where did that river go? To find out, we travel back to around 2600 BC, when the Giza Plateau was a bare shelf of limestone and Sneferu was still learning from the kinked walls of the Bent Pyramid, then follow his son Khufu and the chief minister Hemiunu as granite arrives from Aswan and an inspector named Merer logs his voyages into a harbor at Giza. The story moves on through the workers' cemetery revealed by a stumbling horse, the collapse of the Old Kingdom, the tunnel attributed to the caliph Al-Ma'mun, and the earthquake of 1303 that loosened the white casing, before Howard Vyse uncovers the painted marks of the Friends of Khufu and Kamal el-Mallakh opens a sealed pit holding the king's cedar boat. The final chapters bring the Aswan High Dam, Eman Ghoneim's discovery of the lost Ahramat Branch, and the Grand Egyptian Museum opening beside the plateau. What emerges is a monument that never conquered the desert, only outlived the water that made it possible. If that thought stays with you, subscribe and join us as we uncover the entire history of the world's most famous landmarks, one story at a time.
