The Bengals Just Got A HUGE Wake-Up Call...

The Cincinnati Bengals are 2-1 after a frustrating 30-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and John Sheeran breaks down everything that went wrong in Cincinnati's first AFC North game of the 2026 season. The Bengals had a legitimate chance to win this game, but mistakes across all three phases ultimately proved too costly. The biggest issue was Cincinnati's defense. After looking dominant through the first two weeks, the Bengals gave up 30 points to a Steelers offense that had scored only one offensive touchdown on 25 possessions entering this matchup. Pittsburgh found a clear blueprint for attacking Cincinnati. The Steelers attacked the perimeter with wide-zone runs, sweeps and tosses, forcing Bengals cornerbacks, linebackers and defensive ends to set the edge and make tackles in space. Jaylen Warren took advantage, rushing for 127 yards on only 17 carries. The Bengals' pass rush also struggled to make an impact for most of the afternoon. Aaron Rodgers got the ball out quickly, but Cincinnati also failed to generate enough closing pressure when opportunities were there. Dexter Lawrence still made an impact, but the Bengals couldn't consistently get the same kind of production from the rest of their defensive line that we saw against Tampa Bay and Houston. The special teams mistakes were arguably even more damaging. Cincinnati committed two critical errors that directly extended Pittsburgh possessions and resulted in 10 Steelers points. Cedric Johnson was flagged for roughing the punter on fourth down, and Keyshawn Williams later muffed a punt that the Bengals failed to recover. In a game decided by three points, those mistakes were enormous. The Bengals' offense actually did enough to win for much of the afternoon. Joe Burrow played well outside of the late strip sack, Ja'Marr Chase made another big impact and Cincinnati scored 27 points against a strong Steelers defense. Amarius Mims and Orlando Brown Jr. also played well against Pittsburgh's elite edge-rushing group. But Cincinnati had two opportunities late in the game to take control, and pass-protection mistakes ultimately ended both drives. Dillon Fairchild and Dalton Risner each lost critical reps, with Risner's mistake leading directly to Burrow's game-ending fumble. So where does Cincinnati go from here?
