About 66 million years ago, an asteroid struck what is now Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and helped trigger one of the most consequential mass extinctions in Earth’s history. This is the story of the Chicxulub impact — reconstructed from the evidence it left behind.
In this episode of Science & Space Mysteries, we follow the catastrophe from a thriving Late Cretaceous world to the hypervelocity collision, the formation of the enormous Chicxulub crater, regional blast and heat, powerful tsunamis, falling ejecta, atmospheric disruption and the severe environmental crisis that followed.
But the dinosaurs did not simply vanish in a single instant. How did dust, sulfur-bearing aerosols and possibly soot reduce sunlight? Why did falling productivity destabilize food webs on land and in the oceans? Why did some organisms survive while roughly three quarters of species disappeared?
And there is an important twist: dinosaurs did not completely disappear. Birds are the surviving dinosaur lineage. Mammals were already living alongside dinosaurs long before the impact, and surviving mammal groups later diversified into ecological opportunities opened by the extinction.
Scientists reconstruct Chicxulub using multiple independent lines of evidence, including the global K–Pg boundary, unusual iridium enrichment, shocked quartz, impact spherules, the buried crater beneath the Yucatán and abrupt changes in the fossil record. Some details of the catastrophe — including the exact impactor properties, the extent of wildfire and the magnitude and duration of specific climate effects — remain uncertain and model-dependent.
