Jose Chameleone, whose real name is Joseph Mayanja, is one of Uganda’s most famous and influential musicians. Born in Kampala in 1979, Chameleone developed a passion for music at an early age. He began his career as a DJ before moving to Kenya, where he joined the Ogopa Deejays camp and started building his reputation across East Africa. His big breakthrough came with songs such as “Bageya” and “Mama Mia.” From there, Chameleone became a dominant force in Ugandan music, releasing hit songs including “Kipepeo,” “Shida Za Dunia,” “Valu Valu” and “Nkwagala Nyo.” What made Chameleone stand out was his versatility. He performed in Luganda, English and Swahili, combining different African musical styles and attracting fans across Uganda and beyond. His influence also extended to other artists through Leone Island, the music platform he founded. Several successful Ugandan musicians became associated with the label, further cementing Chameleone’s role in shaping the country’s music industry. Over the years, he has performed internationally, received numerous awards and nominations, and even ventured into politics. Despite the rise of a new generation of Ugandan musicians, Jose Chameleone remains one of the biggest names in the country’s entertainment history. From a young DJ in Kampala to an East African music icon, Chameleone’s journey is a story of talent, ambition, success and lasting influence.
