We bought this Manley VOXBOX used and started noticing hiss in the signal. Since aging tubes can become noisy over time, we decided to open it up and replace four of the tubes using new 12AX7 and 12BH7 tubes.
In this video, we go through the process step by step:
• Opening the Manley VOXBOX
• Identifying the tubes
• Replacing the 12AX7 and 12BH7 tubes
• Powering the VOXBOX back on
• Connecting a microphone for testing
• Monitoring the signal through the speakers
• Pushing the gain to roughly 95%
• Checking for hiss and unwanted noise
• Comparing the VOXBOX design with the Manley Gold Reference microphone
• Replacing the tube in the Manley microphone
The result: a clean signal with no noticeable hiss, even with the VOXBOX pushed extremely hard.
Toward the end, we also take a closer look at the Manley Gold Reference microphone and discuss its tube and transformer-based design. We replaced its tubes as well, although a full powered test will have to come next since we were missing the required 6-pin XLR cable.
A successful repair, a little tube-tech education, and a closer look inside some serious analog studio gear.
