What’s happening with malaria mosquitoes in Kenya? A lot—and not all of it good news. This talk dives into Kenya’s national mosquito surveillance network, which spans 30+ counties and is giving scientists and public health officials the data they need to fight malaria smarter. Led by the Ministry of Health and KEMRI, this effort tracks major malaria vectors like Anopheles gambiae s.s., An. arabiensis, and An. funestus—and reveals worrying trends, like widespread pyrethroid resistance. Even more concerning? The invasive mosquito An. stephensi is now spreading across Kenya, including urban and rural areas. There’s also a first-ever detection of An. coluzzii in Turkana County. This surveillance system is a crucial tool for making real-time decisions about vector control strategies, helping Kenya adapt to emerging threats while staying on top of the old ones. If you want to understand how surveillance informs public health action—and why it’s more important than ever—this talk breaks it all down.
