Beneath the calm, picturesque surface of the Welsh countryside lies Dorothea Quarry—the flooded remains of a massive slate mine plunging more than 100 meters (over 300 feet) deep. While it looks like a peaceful lake from the shore, the dark waters below conceal abandoned tunnels, submerged machinery, severe freezing temperatures, and entangled lines. Over the years, this deceivingly calm destination has claimed the lives of at least 25 divers, including experienced instructors and technical divers like Paula Blakemore, Julian Kelso, and Jason Deans. What makes this unassuming inland quarry one of the deadliest dive spots in Britain? Viewer discretion is advised.
