You open a streaming app. You know exactly what you want to watch. Fifteen minutes later, you're rewatching something you've already seen three times. This week's deep dive is about why that happens — and the arms race now underway between every major streamer to fix it. Claire Tavernier traces the history of streaming interfaces from simple genre rows to AI-powered natural language search, algorithmic rabbit holes and ultra-specific categories including, apparently, one called Erase My Memory So I Can Watch Again. She also explains what happened to her Netflix recommendations after her seven-year-old nephew watched Hot Wheels for twenty minutes. It was not good. Maureen Kerr maps what the major platforms are actually building right now: Netflix's vertical clips feed, HBO Max's conversational search tool, Disney's natural language beta and Jeff Bezos's internal Prime Video redesign called Lighthouse. Four platforms, two features, one quarter. The distinction between those features matters — and so does what changes for advertising when mood-led discovery replaces title rows. In the news: a New Mexico judge orders Meta to pay $942 million on a public nuisance finding — the same legal doctrine used against tobacco and opioid manufacturers, now applied to a social media feed. Sony announces it will phase out physical PlayStation discs from January 2028. And TikTok Shop reports $50 billion in goods sold in the first half of this year, up 92% — with a significant shift in how people are shopping on the platform. Podmojis: jukebox musicals are multiplying (TLC, Neil Diamond, possibly Huey Lewis), LinkedIn declares war on AI slop with one hand while removing its own AI rewriting tool with the other, and the Gen Alpha Melody — a specific four-note motif now embedded in an extraordinary number of current pop songs, with a copyright question Maureen suspects will not go away.
