November 1939. The Soviet Union, a nation of 170 million, invades Finland, a nation of 3.7 million. Moscow expects victory in two weeks. Instead, Finnish soldiers on skis, in white capes, fight the Red Army to a standstill in the frozen forests, until a new Soviet commander changes the war.
This is the full story of the Winter War of 1939 to 1940: the Moscow talks, the staged shelling of Mainila, the motti battles of Suomussalmi and the Raate road, Kollaa, the Mannerheim Line, the Anglo-French plan and the price of peace. Told from the archive.
