Did Christians get their doctrines from the Bible—or did Christian doctrine determine which books became the Bible? In this episode of The Breakdown, Kelvin responds to C.J. Cornthwaite’s argument that no Christian doctrine is truly “biblical,” that the Trinity was developed before Christians searched Scripture for support, and that emerging theology shaped the formation of the biblical canon. We examine: Whether biblical texts communicate meaning or merely receive meaning from interpreters Whether the Trinity can be derived from Scripture How the early church used Scripture and apostolic tradition What the Valentinians actually demonstrate about competing interpretations Whether theology dictated the New Testament canon The difference between apostolic tradition and developing doctrine Why scholars such as Michael Kruger, Fred Sanders, and Robert Letham reach different conclusions C.J. is a legitimately trained scholar, but scholarly credentials do not make every claim an uncontested conclusion of scholarship. The question is whether the historical and philosophical arguments support his sweeping claim that “we got our Bible from our doctrines.” 📬 JOIN THE UNFILTERED NEWSLETTER Get weekly reflections, channel updates, and announcements about upcoming episodes and guests: https://substack.com/@kelvinsfaithunf... 🎧 LISTEN TO THE PODCAST Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2vEHCFR...
