Through the Heather — Journey | A Marian Journey Through the Scottish Highlands
Across the mountain, through the purple heather and along the glen, Journey follows Mary along the road of Christian life—always leading us to her Son.
Inspired by the Scottish Highlands, the Magnificat, Cana and Mary at the foot of the Cross, the song travels through morning and darkness, summer and storm, mountain and valley.
At Cana comes Mary's enduring instruction: “Do whatever He tells you.”
And through every mile of the journey:
Mary, walk beside us through the heather,
Lead us onward to the Light.
Until at last, with our footsteps close to Jesus, our journey ends in song.

Lyrics to Through the Heather — Journey | A Marian Journey Through the Scottish Highlands
Come away across the mountain,
Come away where heather grows,
Where the morning wakes the Highlands,
Where the silver water flows.
Mary, walk the hills beside us,
Walk beside us on the way;
As the morning seeks the sunlight,
Lead us to your Son this day.
Great things the Mighty One has done,
And HOLY is His Name;
His mercy flows from age to age,
His mercy still the same.
Sing, my soul, unto the Lord,
Let hill and valley sing:
Great things the Mighty One has done—
Give glory to the King.
By the well beneath the mountain,
Where the wildflowers bend and blow,
Mary, spread your mantle o'er us
When the cold north waters flow.
Keep us faithful, keep us loving,
Keep us merciful and true;
And as once you spoke at Cana:
“Do whatever He tells you.”
Great things the Mighty One has done,
And HOLY is His Name;
His mercy flows from age to age,
His mercy still the same.
Sing, my soul, unto the Lord,
Let hill and valley sing:
Great things the Mighty One has done—
Give glory to the King.
When the winter wind comes crying,
When the storm is on the glen,
When the road is dark before us,
Mary, walk beside us then.
You who stood beneath the Cross-tree,
You who stayed when others fled,
Hear the Savior give His Mother:
“See your Mother,” Jesus said.
Great things the Mighty One has done,
And HOLY is His Name;
His mercy flows from age to age,
His mercy still the same.
Sing, my soul, unto the Lord,
Let hill and valley sing:
Great things the Mighty One has done—
Give glory to the King.
When the thyme is on the mountain,
When the summer fills the glen,
We will take the road before us,
We will take the road again.
Through the heather, through the valley,
While the evening shadows fall,
Mary, keep us close to Jesus,
Till He gathers home us all.
Great things the Mighty One has done,
And HOLY is His Name;
His mercy flows from age to age,
His mercy still the same.
Sing, my soul, unto the Lord,
Let hill and valley sing:
Great things the Mighty One has done—
Give glory to the King.
Mary, bright above the mountain,
Like the moonrise through the night,
Walk beside us through the heather,
Lead us onward to the Light.
Through the valley, through the Highlands,
Though the road be far and long,
Keep our footsteps close to Jesus,
Till our journey ends in song.
