What does it mean to live as a Christian in a world that doesn’t feel like home? Drawing from 1 Peter 1 and 2, this sermon explores the biblical picture of believers as “exiles,” “pilgrims,” and temporary residents whose true citizenship is in heaven. Using his own experience as a temporary resident in Australia, Eric explains how living somewhere without full citizenship can create a constant awareness that you ultimately belong somewhere else. In the same way, Christians are called to recognize that this world cannot completely satisfy the deepest needs of our souls. Our true home is found in God’s presence. The sermon then asks how Christians should live as exiles. Like the early church, believers are called to live differently—showing forgiveness, generosity, compassion, courage, and hope. Their lives should be both attractive and challenging, reflecting the character of Jesus even when their values are unpopular. Finally, the message points to the source of courage: understanding how deeply God loves us. Jesus Himself became the ultimate exile, leaving heaven and becoming homeless so that we could be brought home to God. Because of His sacrifice, our identity and security do not depend on reputation, possessions, acceptance, or circumstances. Home is not somewhere. Home is someone—and that someone is Jesus.
