One D&D backstory rule - end it exactly one year before the campaign begins, then stop - and your table does the rest. Here's why that single gap works, and how to use it tonight, even on a backstory you've already written.
Most backstories get written right up to the moment the campaign begins. Then the character you wrote and the character you play start disagreeing with each other. The cheek of it! The One Year Wonder fixes that with one gap: everything you wrote is solid ground, one year old, and everything since is a question that you and your table get to answer together. In this video I'll show you why one year is the sweet spot, the two things that happen the moment you leave the gap, the piece of psychology that makes your table treasure what you build together (it involves a Swedish furniture store), and then I'll prove it live by building a backstory from three random pages of the Player's Handbook. It works whether you're the loudest or the quietest player at the table.

If you don't know me - I'm Master Mishap; a Real-Life Game Psychologist and Fictional Seasoned Adventurer. I'm here to make YOU become the MOST creative person at the table, and to harness the skill of playing badly.
