⛰️ TUNG FORT TREK | KATHINGAD | PAWNA LAKE | MAHARASHTRA What happens when you take on one of the most dramatic-looking hill forts around Pawna Lake? 😍 In this vlog, we head towards Tung Fort (Kathingad) in Pune district, Maharashtra, for an exciting trek through the Sahyadris. From the journey to the base village and the steep climb to the fort, to the breathtaking views of Pawna Lake and the surrounding Sahyadri ranges — this trek was all about adventure, nature and history! 🏰 ABOUT TUNG FORT Tung Fort, also known as Kathingad, is a historic hill fort located in the Maval region of Pune district, Maharashtra. The fort stands at approximately 1,075 metres (3,527 ft) above sea level and is famous for its sharp, conical shape and steep approach. The fort was built before 1600 CE during the Adil Shahi period and was later captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Because of its strategic position, Tung served as a lookout point over the Maval region and the routes connecting the surrounding valleys. After the construction of the Pawna reservoir, the fort became especially scenic, with the waters of Pawna Lake surrounding it on three sides. 🥾 THE TREK The trek to Tung Fort is relatively short but has a steep climb, narrow sections and rocky terrain. The final ascent gives you some spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. From the top, you can see several well-known forts and landmarks of the region, including Lohagad, Visapur, Tikona and Koraigad, depending on weather and visibility. 📍 LOCATION Tung Fort, Maval, Pune District, Maharashtra, India The main trekking route starts from the Tungwadi/Tungi area, depending on the approach you take. If travelling from Pune, you can drive towards the Maval/Pawna region and continue towards the Tung Fort base. The exact road conditions and approach can vary, so it is worth checking the route before starting your journey. 🌿 BEST TIME TO VISIT The monsoon and winter seasons are especially popular for the Tung Fort trek. During the monsoon, the Sahyadris become lush green and Pawna Lake creates an incredible backdrop. However, the rocky trail can become slippery, so proper trekking shoes and caution are important. Winter generally offers clearer skies and comfortable trekking conditions. ⚠️ TREKKING TIP Tung Fort may look like a short trek, but some sections are steep and narrow.
