I Went to the Wettest Place on Earth… It Was Completely Dry

Mawsynram, Meghalaya a place famous for receiving some of the highest rainfall on Earth. But when I arrived in winter, the story was completely different. The waterfalls were dry, the landscape felt strangely quiet, and the trip wasn’t going the way I had imagined. Starting from Shillong, I took a local bus to Mawsynram, had a simple local lunch, left my heavy backpack at a homestay and went looking for something else. That’s when I found Krem Puri one of the longest sandstone caves in the world. Krem Puri, meaning “Fairy Cave” in Khasi, is located near Laitsohum village in the Mawsynram region of Meghalaya. Stretching for more than 24 km, it is recognised as the world’s longest sandstone cave. The cave was first discovered in 2016 and later extensively mapped by the Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association. Its maze-like passages were formed within sandstone over millions of years, making Krem Puri a remarkable geological feature of Meghalaya. Fun fact: Fossils of ancient marine reptiles, including mosasaurs, have been reported from the sandstone formations around Krem Puri, adding another layer to its prehistoric story. What started as a slightly disappointing trip turned into one of the most memorable adventures of my Meghalaya journey. After exploring the cave, getting some local snacks and soup, I tried to find a shared cab back to Shillong… but there were none left. So instead of paying for an expensive private cab, I decided to stay the night. A tent. A campsite. A hot dinner. And a 6 AM bus the next morning.
