POV: You're a school dropout. This is every rank explained.
Rank 1: The Dropout. You're seventeen. You sit at the kitchen table and say it: "I'm not going back." The room goes still. Your dad asks, "And then what?" You have nothing. The freedom feels heavier than you expected.
Rank 2: The Dead-End Worker. A warehouse job. A 4:45 alarm. Nine hours scanning boxes. Paychecks that vanish. You add weekend food deliveries. Your car smells like fries. You call it temporary. It has been four months. You watch everyone else move forward on Instagram.
Rank 3: The Drifter. You leave the warehouse. Hardware store. Landscaping. Rejections. Years of nothing sticking. You wonder if you're the problem. Then, almost by accident, a coworker shows you how to wire an electrical panel.
Rank 4: The Skill Builder. You ask Danny to teach you. He shrugs: "If you actually show up." You do. Every Saturday for two months. You mess up constantly. You buy your first multimeter. You study for an apprentice certification. No one is pushing you into this room. You walked in yourself.
Rank 5: The Skilled Worker. You pass the exam on the second try. Danny recommends you. Suddenly, you're no longer holding the flashlight. Others hold it for you. Your pay doubles. You pay off your car. You leave the apartment you shared with two strangers.
Rank 6: The Independent. At twenty-one, you start taking jobs under your own name. It's scarier than employment ever was. No guaranteed paycheck. No insurance. You miss Tasha's birthday dinner for a client emergency. She says, "It's okay. Next time." The plainness stays with you.
Rank 7: The Provider. Business is steady. You hire your first helper. You pay your parents' internet bill. You cover Tasha's car repair. But you've missed three family dinners. Tasha tells you: "I'm proud of what you built. I just miss who you were before you had to build it every single day."
Rank 8: The Successful Dropout. Five years later. You own a small company with four employees. A house. A yard where Tasha's kids play. People ask about your story, as if dropping out were the achievement. But you know the truth: it wasn't the dropping out. It was everything after.
Rank 9: The Mentor. A friend's kid corners you at a barbecue. "School's pointless anyway," he says. You don't give him what he wants. You tell him the parts people skip. You tell him dropping out didn't make you successful. It just took away the safety net. Everything afterward was the hard part. And it took longer than he thinks.
You call Tasha. You tell her about the kid. She asks, "What'd you tell him?" You say, "The truth. That it wasn't the dropping out. It was everything after." There's a pause. Then she says, quiet and a little amused: "Looks like you finally figured out what I meant."
