For Jewish students, university should be a place to learn, belong and find their feet as adults. After October 7, campuses became something else entirely.
Jeremy Suss, President of the Australasian Union of Jewish Students, and Liat Granot, AUJS Advocacy and PR Manager, describe what Jewish students experienced on Australian campuses in the wake of October 7. Students hiding their Jewish identity. Being spat on, abused, and walking in fear. Warnings delivered to university leaders that went largely unanswered.
Jeremy and Liat share what they told the Royal Commission about the institutions that failed to protect their students — a devastating account of dereliction at the highest levels of Australian academia. They detail how university administrations, despite being informed of what was happening, failed to act with the urgency the situation demanded, leaving Jewish students to navigate hostility largely on their own.
But this episode does not end in defeat. It ends in defiance. Young Jewish Australians continuing to build community, continuing to lead, and continuing to live proudly on the campuses that failed them.
