The British plug is enormous. It has three substantial pins, a fuse inside it, insulated sections and a longer earth pin. Even the socket contains hidden shutters that the plug must open.
So why does plugging in a British kettle require all this engineering?
In Investigation 001, we open up the familiar BS 1363 plug and follow its story back to post-war Britain. We discover how ring circuits, fused plugs, socket shutters and changing safety standards became parts of one surprisingly coherent electrical system.
The result is clever, cumbersome and extremely unpleasant to step on.
This is not an attempt to prove that Britain has the “best plug in the world”. It is an investigation into how history, regulation and engineering compromises can shape an ordinary object until we stop noticing how extraordinary it is.
The Institute of Interesting Things investigates the overlooked ideas hiding inside everyday life.
Until next time, look again.
