Brother Tang Jacob argues that the Local Church’s emphasis on relying on the Holy Spirit, experiencing the cross, and related life experiences all rest on the foundation of trichotomy, which is itself the foundation of Watchman Nee’s spiritual theology. Without first clarifying this foundation, following the system carries significant risk. The video further evaluates Watchman Nee’s interpretation of Genesis 2:7, arguing that his claim that “the Spirit of God combined with the body produces the soul” lacks support in the Hebrew text, since the same terminology is also used of animals. The trichotomist assertions that the spirit is purer than the soul and that only the spirit can directly commune with God are likewise inconsistent with passages such as the Psalms, where the soul is said to worship and look to God. If the trichotomous foundation is mistaken, then the “reliance on the Holy Spirit” and “walking the way of the cross” practiced by millions of brothers and sisters in the Local Church may not be what they appear to be. The final conclusion is that Scripture does not support trichotomy: spirit and soul are not two independent components but the same spiritual reality viewed from different angles.
