"Four thousand cattle went up the strand before noon,
five hundred horses behind them, and a thousand sheep."
Twelve Wounds — Granuaile Vol. XVII, Track 05
Dynasty Fallen · He rowed them across in his own boats, and they bound him in the dark.

1586. Owen O'Flaherty, Gráinne Ní Mháille's eldest son, was a lord in Connemara. When English soldiers of the new governor of Connacht, Sir Richard Bingham, came to his country, he took them in: ferried them over, sat them at his fire, fed them. That night they bound him. In the morning his herds were driven off, eighteen of his people were hanged, and Owen was dead — killed while bound, with twelve wounds.
Everything in the song's arithmetic is hers. The four thousand cattle, the five hundred horses, the thousand sheep, the eighteen and the twelve wounds come from her own complaint to the Crown — the record's numbers, handed back to it.
This is the one place the album breaks. The only soprano lift on the record is here, a keen in the old Irish caoineadh form — which was never only a lament but a public naming of who was responsible. It does not ask for pity. The man who signed for it never left his chair; the final chorus hardens instead of grieving, and its last line is a refusal: "And I am not asking."

SOURCES
Anne Chambers, Granuaile: Grace O'Malley — Ireland's Pirate Queen; Grace O'Malley's own statement of grievances in the State Papers for Ireland. The killing of Owen O'Flaherty in 1586 by soldiers under Bingham's government, the twelve wounds, the hanging of eighteen of his people and the driving-off of the herd are documented — but the figures are HER figures, given in her complaint, and the English account of the same events is not hers. The hospitality (the boats, the fire, the bread) follows her telling. The video does not show the killing: what is shown is the fire, the bread, an empty tent and a rope, and the twelve wounds exist only in the lyric. Owen's face and every likeness here are imagined; there is no contemporary portrait of him or of his mother.
