We began our day in Lerwick -- the only town in all of the Shetland islands. "Clay Bay," as it is named in Old Norse, is also Britain's most northerly town. After tendering to Victoria Pier, we meandered up and down Lerwick's quaint cobblestone streets in the walking area of the town, getting caught in a few rain showers. We really enjoyed the numerous old stone buildings and the Norwegian/Viking aura of the town. Many of the restaurants were closed today, as usual, which guided us toward our "chippy" lunch near the port! We enjoyed exploring Commercial Street and its surrounds and managed to (delightfully) find a few yarn shops that were on Leslie's shopping list. (Nice little yarn haul ...) After lunch we enjoyed a tour through the countryside, dotted with many of the over 100,000 Shetland sheep that find their home in Shetland, many stone walls, and a lot of fading heather. We stopped at a Shetland Pony croft and enjoyed hearing about the ponies -- their history and their potential future. (They are mostly companion animals these days.) We tendered back to the ship to begin our evening with a lovely dinner, music trivia, a sparkly show and then a chill guitarist to wind down our evening. Tomorrow we explore Aberdeen!
