Is Kairouan Worth Visiting? The Islamic City in Tunisia I Didn't Know Existed 🇹🇳

Kairouan, Tunisia is one of the most important cities in Islamic history, yet before this trip I barely knew it existed. I came to visit Sidi Sahabi and the Great Mosque of Kairouan, but by the end of the £60 excursion I was questioning whether the experience was actually worth it. In this Kairouan, Tunisia travel vlog, I explore some of the city's most important Islamic sites and discover why Kairouan holds such a significant place in Tunisia's history. The journey begins at Sidi Sahabi, the shrine associated with one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, before continuing to the Great Mosque of Kairouan. This was the part of the day I was most looking forward to, especially as I had visited Kairouan before without getting the opportunity to go inside. The Great Mosque was easily one of the highlights of the trip. From its huge courtyard and historic architecture to learning more about its role in Kairouan, this was the moment that made me understand why the city is so important. The final part of the excursion was very different. We were taken to a carpet and rug shop, which gave me a more honest look at the organised-tour experience in Tunisia. Kairouan is famous for its handmade carpets, but personally, this was not what I had paid for the excursion to experience. So, is Kairouan worth visiting? For me, the Islamic history, Sidi Sahabi and especially the Great Mosque of Kairouan made the journey worthwhile, even if I would have preferred more time exploring the city itself and less time inside tourist shops.
