The Duke Returned After Two Years at Sea—She Had Been Running His Estate All Along

The Duke Returned After Two Years at Sea—She Had Been Running His Estate All Along... For nearly two years, Honor Brahmant had written weekly reports to the Duke of Oldhurst in her father’s handwriting. The Duke believed his steward was still managing Foxfall. He was wrong. After a seizure took most of her father’s speech and the use of his right hand, Honor quietly assumed responsibility for the estate. She studied the accounts, managed drainage, watched the flooded moor, dealt with tenants, supervised necessary work, and kept families safe through difficult seasons. She had intended to tell the Duke immediately. Her father stopped her. He remembered what had happened the last time a clever London man with clean boots had been sent to manage land he did not understand. So Honor continued the deception. Then news arrived that the Duke’s ship had reached Plymouth. He was coming home. Honor knew exactly what people would call what she had done. A lie. But hidden behind the deception were two years of decisions that had kept Foxfall functioning—and evidence of how thoroughly a quiet steward’s daughter understood land the Duke himself had been absent from. What would happen when Honor confessed before anyone else could expose her? And would the Duke see only the false signature on two years of letters—or the woman who had quietly kept his entire estate alive? What begins with a Duke returning from sea unfolds through forged signatures, a disabled father, flooded farmland, estate accounts, difficult moral choices, invisible competence, trust, and a woman who has been doing a steward’s work without ever being given the title.
