Mediterranean Revival architecture, Spanish tile, arched loggias, cloisters, and a ballroom carrying so much gold leaf that it shifts color as the afternoon light moves across it. It is a National Historic Landmark, and there is nothing else on the island that photographs like it. Of everywhere I have filmed, Mar-a-Lago is the property that most deserves to be shot on film, and the reason is the calendar. Mar-a-Lago was built in the same decade the home movie camera arrived. Shot digitally, it flattens into a real estate listing. Shot on Super 8mm, the house goes back into its own era: the gold turns warm instead of harsh, the tile softens, and Mar-a-Lago looks the way it was built to be remembered rather than the way a sensor records it.
