What started as a simple service call on a John Deere 6300 that wouldn’t start quickly turned into a full hydraulic nightmare. After getting the tractor running and driving it, I found it had zero hydraulics and absolutely no charge pressure. The tractor was hauled back to the shop for further diagnosis, and things only got worse from there.
During testing, there was no charge pressure and not even a drop of oil coming out of the charge pump outlet. After draining the oil and removing the sump screen, the problem became clear — the screen was completely plugged with clutch and brake material. Instead of immediately tearing the tractor completely apart, I cleaned the system, installed a new sump screen, and refilled the transmission. Charge pressure returned and hydraulic functions came back to life.
But the story didn’t end there. The brake pedals went straight to the floor, confirming another major issue. The rear final drives had to come off for inspection, where it was confirmed that the brake discs had completely failed and contaminated the system. Both rear brakes were repaired, final drives reinstalled, and the tractor finally became operational again.
To finish the job, both leaking steering cylinders were replaced — which turned into a job of its own. What started as a no-start turned into a full hydraulic and brake recovery, and another example of how one failure can snowball into something much bigger.
If you enjoy real-world diagnostics, field repairs, and seeing what actually fails inside these machines, this one’s for you.
