At the Naresh Bhatt murder trial in Manassas Park, Virginia (testimony from November 2, 2026), the Commonwealth calls Mahesh Kafle — the older brother of Mamta Kafle Bhatt — who testifies through a Nepali interpreter. Mahesh tells the jury about his family in Nepal and his mother Gita, present in the courtroom, and that he is now adopting Mamta's young daughter, Nima. He explains that the name "Mamta" means "love," that his sister earned a nursing degree in India, and that she married Naresh Bhatt on December 10, 2020, in Nepal — testifying that before the wedding he told her not to marry this man. He describes staying in contact after Mamta moved to the U.S. in 2021, and recalls Naresh complaining that Mamta kept "bad company" that was "spoiling her life" and that she wouldn't listen to his parents or to him. He then describes February 2024, when the calls between his mother and Mamta turned from video to audio-only, and a photo Mamta sent him with the words "save this — might need in the future." Over objection, the court admits Mamta's statements to him as evidence of her state of mind — that she was "sending and un-sending," that she had "not eaten in two days," and that she was "not safe" — and admits one photograph (Exhibit 452A) under a limiting instruction (see note below). He testifies the image was a screenshot he saved, dated February 3, 2024, and that Mamta was "very happy" about becoming a U.S. citizen. Mahesh walks the jury through the August 2024 timeline: his mother couldn't reach Mamta, and on calls across August 2–5 Naresh told him, variously, that she "went to work and hasn't returned," that "other people are missing from our neighborhood," that he couldn't go looking "because of the baby," and that "she took her phone and her laptop." Mahesh urged him to file a police report, then flew from Kathmandu to Dulles to search himself, and has worked with police since. Asked whether Mamta would ever have left her baby, he answers, "I don't think so." The Commonwealth publishes a photo of baby Nima (Exhibit 434) and four short videos Mamta had posted to her own social media (Exhibit 336). The defense declines cross-examination — "no further questions" — and Mahesh is excused; the Commonwealth then rested its case. Mamta Kafle Bhatt, a 28-year-old nurse and new mother, was last seen in late July 2024 and has never been found. ⏱️CHAPTERS 0:00 Mamta's brother is called — the interpreter is sworn 0:56 Sworn in — Mahesh Kafle, from Nepal 1:33 His family in Nepal — and adopting Mamta's daughter, Nima 5:08 What "Mamta" means — "love" — and her nursing degree in India 6:59 The marriage to Naresh (December 10, 2020); courtroom identification 11:21 "I told her not to get married with this man" 14:31 What Naresh would say — Mamta's "bad company" that was "spoiling her life" 16:29 "She wouldn't listen" — to Naresh's parents, and to Naresh 20:44 February 2024 — the calls switch from video to audio-only 23:55 The photo Mamta sent — "save this, might need in the future" 24:30 The ruling — Mamta's words come in: "don't tell Mom and Dad" 28:42 "I have not eaten in two days" … "I am not safe" 30:01 The photograph marked and admitted (Exhibit 452A) 34:37 The court's limited ruling; 452B withdrawn 40:40 A screenshot, dated February 3, 2024 42:34 Her U.S. citizenship — "she was very happy" 44:27 Nepali culture and divorce — "it doesn't look good in our society" 44:45 Learning Mamta is missing 47:27 August 2, 2024 — "she went to work and hasn't returned" 49:32 August 4 — "other people are missing from our neighborhood" 51:09 "Why don't you file a complaint to the police?" 53:10 Flying from Kathmandu to Dulles to search for her 55:11 "Would Mamta ever have left her baby?" — "I don't think so" 55:45 A photo of baby Nima (Exhibit 434) 1:07:23 Mamta's own social-media videos (Exhibit 336) 1:19:45 The court's limiting instruction on the February photo 1:21:08 "That was my last question" — the Commonwealth's examination ends 1:21:47 The defense waives cross — "no further questions"; Mahesh is excused and the Commonwealth rests 📌 THE CASE Naresh Bhatt, of Manassas Park, Virginia, is charged with first-degree murder and defiling a dead body in the death of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt.
