Being a carer isn’t the job it was 20 years ago. Care staff are now supporting people with much more complex needs. They’re expected to understand dementia, use digital care systems, keep accurate records, administer medication and, in some settings, carry out clinical observations, all while providing genuinely person-centred care. Laura and James talk about just how much the role has changed, what we now expect from care staff, and why recruiting the right people can be harder than ever. The job may have changed dramatically, but some things haven’t. Good care still depends on empathy, compassion and being able to connect with the person in front of you. This episode is based on broad management experience and does not refer to any specific individuals, organisations or situations.
