ONE STEP AT A TIME: Australian Alps Walking Track - 2017
‘Despair, but not disaster, turns to triumph’.
In support of the Cathy Freeman Foundation, with very little hiking experience, Kylie Evans (recently Top 10 on Australian Surviver), Dr Kerryn McTaggart from Parks Victoria and 'old man' Trevor Evans leave Walhalla, Victoria, waving goodbye to family, friends and media crews on a miserable, cold and rainy day.
The journey ahead was full of hidden surprises, traps, disappointments and despair, with exhilarating mountain-top climbs and even a number of unexpected and exhausting snow-covered traverses.
At the pace traveled, most of the thirty five days left us exhausted with no intent but to eat, get warm and sleep. Many snakes including a handsome two metre Alpine Copperhead and several large Tigers and Browns watched us intently as we passed by, or on occasion even stepped directly over them. We were never scared of course ... but there was no time to stop and chat!
Mt Kosciusko, Australia's highest peak, was one of the endless mountains ranges climbed.
Thunder roared on Remembrance Day, 11 November, as we paused high in the mountains above Thawra, near Canberra, to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, including Grandfather William Osmotherly who flew fifty missions, many as a rear gunner in the Lancasters.
