Exploring Hope Valley by Jeep | Sierra Nevada 4x4 Trails | Part One - Forestdale Road

What if I told you that just south of Lake Tahoe, the west fork of the Carson River carves its way through a beautiful expansive high mountain meadow known collectively as Hope, Faith, and Charity Valleys. What if I told you that during the height of the Gold Rush in the late 1850s, emigrant wagons traversed this valley navigating granite passes as a vital lifeline over the Sierra Nevadas? And…what if I showed you…several easily accessible options for you to explore this high alpine area while following in the footsteps of these historical journeys? Whether you’re driving a stock high clearance 4x4 or a built overland rig, this could serve as a guide to this historic high country. Along the way, we will assess the conditions and difficulty of each trail so that you can decide for yourself how far you wish to venture. We’ll explore several beginner and intermediate off road trails which branch out through the Hope Valley backcountry system. Using the paved Blue Lakes Road as our central backbone, we’ll head out west to tackle the high shelf granite of Forestdale Road leading to the Blue Lakes, before heading east to explore Burnside Lake, then climb toward the heights of Hawkins Peak and Pistol Peak.
