Can a Cheap Headjoint Transform an Expensive Flute?
Can a cheap flute headjoint transform an expensive flute? Most flutists are told to put a professional headjoint on a student flute, but in this video we flip the question and look at what happens when a budget headjoint meets a high-end flute body.
We cover the history of the modern flute headjoint, from Theobald Boehm's original 1871 embouchure design to Albert Cooper's garden-shed workshop and the Cooper Scale that changed flute intonation. You'll also hear about Verne Q. Powell and the famous 1939 World's Fair platinum flute, which sold at Christie's in 1986 for $170,000 plus fees.
We then look at the science. John Coltman's 1971 blind study and Gregor Widholm's 2001 Vienna study tested silver, gold, platinum, copper and wooden flutes, and both found that listeners could not reliably tell the materials apart. We explain what that means for headjoint upgrades, flute tone, and how much you should really spend.
You'll also learn:
✔ Why a hand-cut headjoint can cost $2,000 to $15,000 or more
✔ How Brannen Brothers and Powell's Sonaré line separate the headjoint from the body
✔ Headjoint fit, tenon sizes, and why flute intonation can suffer after a swap
✔ The truth behind the claim that "80% of the sound is in the headjoint"
✔ Why the player matters more than the metal
Whether you're a student flutist, an adult returning player, a flute teacher, or a collector of professional flutes, this guide will help you think clearly before buying your next headjoint or flute.
