Look at the ceiling of the Sagrada Família. The columns lean. They split into branches. Nothing about it looks like it should stand. But it does, and the man who designed it didn't start by drawing it. Antoni Gaudí started by hanging strings from a board, weighting them with little bags of lead shot, and letting gravity find the shape. Flip that picture over, and the sagging string becomes an arch. In this video: why Gothic cathedrals need flying buttresses, the 1675 riddle about hanging chains, how Gaudí's string model worked, why the columns branch like trees, what happened to his models in 1936, and how the tower reached 172.5 metres in 2026.
