Three days after she was buried, a photograph of her in her casket was on a magazine rack in every grocery store in America. A private viewing is a short list of people a family trusted by name. Whoever took that picture was on it.
Thirty-nine years embalming in a Midwestern funeral home. I was not there and prepared nobody here. This is the published record read from the prep-room side - and where it is blank, I say so.
📕 My book, The Last Gift - plan your funeral now, so your family is never upsold one later ($24): https://ruthmercer.com/?ref=desc
What I cover:
The coroner's finding, said once, exactly as the record says it
Eight days, a coast-to-coast flight, a gold hearse and three police cars
Why the family drove to Whigham and to no other firm in Newark
Was she embalmed? Nobody has ever said - and what the timetable suggests
The casket price everybody quotes and nobody can source
Buried beside a father who chose that ground nine years earlier
The photograph: what the tabloid claimed, what the funeral home denied
FACT-CHECK: Died 11 Feb 2012, aged 48. LA County coroner: accidental drowning, contributing factors "the effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use"; other substances recorded as not contributing; no foul play. Flown Van Nuys to Teterboro 13 Feb, then to Whigham Funeral Home, Newark, which also buried her father in 2003. Tyler Perry's jet: reported, not confirmed. Funeral 18 Feb, New Hope Baptist Church, invitation-only, about 1,500 guests, reported at three to four hours; eulogy by Marvin Winans. Buried 19 Feb, Fairview Cemetery, Westfield NJ, beside John Russell Houston Jr (d. 2003). No public statement exists on embalming and no sourced casket price exists. The National Enquirer cover was never verified; Carolyn Whigham denied the home took or sold it.
