Jacob worked fourteen years for his uncle Laban and finished with nothing in his own name. Then he was offered a blank cheque, and he turned the money down. What he asked for instead was the speckled and spotted animals, the stock his employer thought was worthless, and six years later the wealth of the whole region had changed hands. The mechanism is sitting in Genesis 30, in a chapter most people skim because they think it is a story about sheep. The Hebrew makes the whole thing plain. When Laban says name your wages, the word is maskoret, the payment of a hired man. What Jacob asks for instead is miqneh, livestock, from the root qanah, to acquire. A maskoret is a number, and a number written by somebody else can be rewritten by somebody else, ten times if they like. A miqneh eats grass and makes more miqneh while you are asleep. Fourteen years of wages left him with nothing. Six years of flock left him with more than the man who employed him.
