The Mercedes-Benz CLR LM was Mercedes’ 1999 LMGTP prototype, built by AMG and HWA as the successor to the CLK GTR and CLK LM. Powered by a ~5.7 L V8 making around 600 hp, it was designed for high-speed Le Mans glory—but instead became infamous for its aerodynamic instability. At the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans, Mark Webber’s car flew twice (qualifying and warm-up), and Peter Dumbreck’s #5 flipped spectacularly during the race, vaulting the barriers. Mercedes withdrew the remaining car and cancelled the entire program.
