King Mahabali's Just and Prosperous Rule: Grandson of devotee Prahlada, King Mahabali was an extremely powerful, generous, and righteous ruler. There was no discrimination, poverty, or injustice in his kingdom, and the people loved him dearly.
The Devas' Concern and the Vamana Avatar: Anxious about King Mahabali's growing power and influence, Lord Indra and the other deities sought Lord Vishnu's intervention. To maintain cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu took birth as a dwarf Brahmin boy (the Vamana avatar).
The Request for Three Paces of Land and Keeping the Promise: During Mahabali's grand sacrifice (yajna), Lord Vamana asked for only three paces of land as alms. Despite being warned by his guru Shukracharya, Mahabali stood firm on his word and pledged to grant the requested land.
The Cosmic Form and Mahabali's Self-Surrender: Lord Vamana assumed his colossal form (Virat roop), covering the entire Earth with his first step and the heavenly realms with his second. With no space left for the third step, Mahabali humbly offered his own head.
The Significance of Onam and the Special Boon: Pleased by Mahabali's devotion, integrity, and sacrifice, Lord Vishnu made him the ruler of the netherworld (Patala) and granted him a boon to visit his beloved subjects on Earth once a year—an occasion celebrated across Kerala as the festival of Onam.
