MythBusters — S12 E9 "Fire in the Hole" — Aired July 10, 2014 The myth comes straight from Hollywood action logic — a grenade is thrown, a hero draws their firearm and shoots the grenade out of the air before it can land and explode — and Adam and Jamie built a heavily armored remote bunker on a remote stretch of land to test it properly, first establishing that a standard grenade detonates five seconds after the spoon pops off, and then firing a 12-gauge buckshot round, a .45 caliber pistol round, and a .308 rifle round sequentially at live grenades to find out whether any standard firearm has the energy to disable a grenade before it goes off rather than simply setting it off faster, noting throughout that even if the physics worked, a person would have to be extraordinarily accurate under enormous pressure to have any realistic chance of pulling it off.
