On Saturday night, October 24, 2026, Borr Drilling's jack-up rig Prospector 5 sank off Mayumba, Gabon, while setting up next to BW Energy's MaBoMo platform on the Dussafu Marin licence. Borr says preliminary information points to a punch-through during preload, followed by a loss of stability; Gabon's oil ministry says the seabed gave way under one of the rig's supports. Of 115 people on board, 110 are safe. Borr and Gabon's government say five are unaccounted for; Reuters, citing a union official, reported one of them was found dead, which the government has not confirmed. The search continues. In order: what officials have said; how a jack-up stands on the seabed and why it preloads; how a punch-through happens (our own diagram, not to scale); the 2021 Naga 7 sinking off Sarawak; and what happens next (search, investigation, MaBoMo, diesel on board).
