She went past all of them. — Around 1480 the answer was obvious, and everyone on the steppe had already worked it out. The widow marries the strongest knife. The strongest knife takes the throne. The fighting stops. The claimants came in one after another and laid it out for her like arithmetic, and not one of them was wrong. She went past every one of them. What she took instead was a seven-year-old orphan living on other people's leftovers — Batmönkh, the last thing alive with the blood of Genghis in it, hidden as a nobody by women who never knew what they were feeding. She adopted him. She swore it at the ancestral cairn, to the banners and the dead. She set him on the throne and had him proclaimed Dayan Khan, and then she spent the next twelve years making the bet come true. This is the album's hinge and its loudest track. Three songs of pressure with no move made, and then the move — and the armour arrives inside this one: the widow being counted with the moveable goods in Track 02 rides out of Track 04 as a commander. The register is a dare. Not triumph, not celebration — she never once celebrates on this record. It is a woman who has just done the most reckless thing anyone on the steppe has done in a century, saying argue with me into the faces of men who suddenly cannot. And then the outro refuses the victory it just earned. Her adoption of the seven-year-old Batmönkh (Batu Möngke) — the last living descendant of Genghis Khan — and his proclamation as Dayan Khan around 1480–1481 are drawn from the Mongol chronicle tradition: principally the Erdeni-yin Tobci (Sagang Sechen, 1662) and the Altan Tobchi, with modern scholarship on the Northern Yuan and the Oirat ascendancy. The adoption, the vow before the ancestral shrine and the enthronement are chronicle-attested; the rival claimants and the pressure to remarry are the chronicles' frame.
