China built the world’s largest automated container terminal — and then the terminal outgrew its original design. Shanghai’s Yangshan Phase IV automated terminal uses AI-driven control systems, digital-twin technology, automated cranes and driverless vehicles to move millions of containers with minimal on-site human intervention. Designed for 6.3 million TEUs, it handled more than 8 million TEUs in 2025.
