Torus Motion is a deep-tech hardware startup based in Chennai, India, specialising in the design and mass production of axial flux motors and proprietary universal controllers. Founded in 2019 by three mechatronics engineers, Vignesh Manimaran, Abbhi Vignesh Kandasamy and Vibhakar Senthil Kumar, the company emerged from a frustration with the Indian supply chain. While building unmanned ground vehicles, the founders realised they were entirely dependent on importing expensive motors from China and Europe. To end this reliance, they spent five years developing homegrown axial flux technology that outperforms global alternatives in both cost and capability. Today, Torus Motion is the first Indian company to successfully commercialise and mass-produce these advanced motors for the electric mobility sector. 00:00 - Intro 01:07 - Understanding Torus Motion with Vibhakar Senthil 06:00 - The Assembly Line 06:21 - V1 AC 06:39 - V1 X 07:07 - V2 LC 07:21 - V1 for Appliances 07:38 - The Architecture of Axial Flux Motors with Vignesh Manimaran 14:22 - Torus Motion Control Studio with Abbhi Vignesh Kandasamy 18:12 - End-Of-Line Testing 20:15 - The Story of Torus Motion The technological advantage of Torus Motion lies in its axial flux architecture. Unlike traditional cylindrical radial flux motors, axial flux motors arrange their rotors and stators like parallel discs. While notoriously difficult to mass-produce due to the challenge of maintaining perfectly even millimetre-scale air gaps, Torus Motion cracked the engineering code. Their motors are 50% lighter and much more compact than conventional alternatives. Despite this small footprint, they deliver a 135% improvement in torque density and 15% greater efficiency, achieving a power density of up to 1.7 kilowatts per kilogram. Furthermore, Torus Motion uses a modular, stackable design. By simply stacking an additional stator on the base model, they can double the power output using the exact same bill of materials. A major part of their competitive edge is a breakthrough in manufacturing methodology. Traditionally, motor stators are built by stamping laminated steel sheets, a capital-intensive process that wastes up to 40% of the raw material. Torus Motion bypassed this by adapting powder compaction, a single-step technique typically reserved for gear manufacturing. This allows them to achieve near-perfect material utilisation of over 99%, drastically reducing costs, waste, and carbon emissions. Currently operating an asset-light model, Torus Motion owns all intellectual property and custom tooling but leverages Indian vendors to fabricate the components. These parts are then brought to their Chennai facility for precision assembly and rigorous end-of-line testing. Beyond hardware, Torus Motion has built a highly versatile software ecosystem and a proprietary universal controller that works with both their own motors and standard traditional ones. Unlike competitors who sell motors tuned strictly for one specific vehicle, Torus Motion provides a complete control studio and a Bluetooth mobile app. Users can calibrate the motor to any vehicle within minutes by inputting basic parameters like gear ratio and wheel diameter. This customisability and real-time data logging has made their tech incredibly popular among collegiate racing leagues, robotics teams, and commercial electric vehicle manufacturers. Torus Motion currently supplies powertrains for a vast array of applications, including electric two-wheelers, agricultural vehicles, marine equipment, HVAC systems, and military robotics. Operating out of a modest research facility producing roughly one hundred motors a month, the startup is now raising a ten crore rupee funding round. This capital will allow them to open a 15,000 square foot production facility in Chennai, scaling capacity to 2,000 motors and 3,000 controllers monthly. With multiple utility patents granted and dozens more being filed internationally, Torus Motion is rapidly establishing itself as a self-reliant force in global electric mobility.
