Join me today as we explore Hole-in-the-Ground…first episode in a series exploring out of the way locations in Central Oregon
Making my way through the Deschutes National Forest in central Oregon heading to find a campsite near the Hole-in-the-Ground location so I can spend the afternoon and possibly next morning exploring.
Approximately 75,000 years ago, this area was a large sea over 200 feet deep which rivaled the Great Salt Lake in size.
Frequent volcanic events caused by subsurface magma heating up groundwater which released explosive steam repeatedly blowing rock and ash into the sky forming cinder cones and other nearby lava tubes.
One such event which scientists estimate occurred multiple times over a period of a few days to a few weeks, resulted in a mile wide crater known today as Hole-in-the-Ground.
I developed this channel to chronicle my adventures in my Jeep Wrangler exploring trails and offroad locations throughout the western united states. I enjoy exploring remote locations which are rarely, if ever visited, always looking for remote locations that I imagine no other human has ever visited. If you are interested in remote trails, historical routes, ghost towns, abandoned mining camps, beautiful desert and mountain scenery, then this is a channel for you.
