Every now and then I come across a horror film that reminds me just why I love horror, how much originality there still is within the genre, and Masking Threshold (2021) is one of those films. Directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner, this crazy experimental horror film follows a man suffering from a debilitating hearing condition who becomes obsessed with discovering the source of the sounds tormenting him. What starts as a series of seemingly harmless scientific experiments gradually descends into something genuinely disturbing, and just so original! But what makes this film so fascinating isn’t just its story. It’s the way it’s told. Combining the visual style of YouTube tutorials with extraordinary macro photography, deeply uncomfortable sound design and elements of psychological and cosmic horror, Masking Threshold creates an experience unlike almost anything else I’ve seen. In this video, I explore the film’s unconventional approach to horror, its themes of obsession, isolation and the limits of human perception, and why I think it’s one of the most interesting and overlooked horror films of recent years. This certainly won’t be a film for everybody, but if you love experimental horror that isn’t afraid to do something completely different, I really recommend giving this one a chance. Let me know if you’ve seen Masking Threshold and what you made of it. I’d be particularly interested to hear your interpretations of the film.
