You say "I have nothing to wear" every morning. Ancient humans really had nothing, and one tiny insect reveals exactly when that changed.
Take a trip 120,000 years back and find out when ancient humans started wearing clothes—and why!
When did ancient humans start wearing clothes.
ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
When did ancient humans start wearing clothes? In this video, we trace your closet back through deep history. We start with the loss of body hair around 1.2 million years ago, then visit Contrebandiers Cave in Morocco, where polished bone tools and cut-marked animal bones point to hide working about 120,000 years ago.
We look at Neanderthal leather tools from France, meet the body louse whose DNA helps date the arrival of clothing, and discover the oldest known bone needle from Denisova Cave in Siberia. Then comes the twist: clothes may have started in warm Africa, long before the ice, which suggests that decoration and identity mattered as much as warmth.
We finish with Dzudzuana Cave flax fibers, Taforalt shell beads, the beaded outfits of Sungir, and the layered clothing of Ötzi the Iceman. If you like prehistoric anthropology and archaeology explained with evidence and storytelling, this video is for you!
