Welcome to Heraklion the capital city of Crete, Heraklion was once one of the ports of Knossos, Crete's ancient Capital which is situated a few km north of Heraklion. During the Middle Ages and renaissance under Byzantine, Arab and Venetian rule developed into the fortified capital of Crete, known simply as "Megalo Kastro" large castle by the locals and Candia by the Venetians. The new Venetian walls of Heraklion was the largest investment of the Serenissima in its whole history, made after the fall of Famagusta and Cyprus to the Ottomans.
