China's Guizhou and Hunan provinces are lands of miraculous, breathtaking landscapes. While famous spots like Zhangjiajie and Huangguoshu Waterfall are well-known, this journey takes you to hidden paradises.
Part 1: The Flavor of the Scenery
The adventure begins in Dajing Village, a hidden gem in Guizhou's Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. Formed by karst topography, the village is called 'the cave kingdom' because it's surrounded by over 90 caves. A boat and hike through Xiangshui Cave lead to a secret valley inside a giant sinkhole. Here, you'll meet the Buyi people, one of China's 55 ethnic minorities, and share a special dinner of Huangdouji (fried chicken with yellow beans).
Next, we visit the Libo Kuwan Forest theme park for unique experiences like trekking through karst caves, cliff jumping, and enjoying a cup of coffee at the Xuanya Cafe, which hangs 200 meters above a cliff. The journey continues to Hunan's Danxia landforms, including Gaoyiling, known as 'Hunan's Grand Canyon,' and the thrilling Daobeishan ridge. We also explore ancient cave dwellings and a mysterious cave temple, discovering the resilient lives of the people who have lived alongside nature for centuries.
Part 2: Welcome to Xiangxi and Tongren
Our journey starts in Xiangxi, Hunan Province, a land of ancient traditions and mysterious nature. Following the Xiangxi suspension wall road, we reach Shuanglong Village, a small Miao village nestled among terraced rice paddies. We visit a 100-year-old traditional home with a kitchen full of hung-up smoked pork, a specialty of Hunan. We help an elderly woman sell her scallions at the local morning market, Zaoshi. We also follow farmers from Jinhe Town as they ride a morning train to Tongren City to sell their produce. Finally, we experience the vibrant hospitality and excitement of the Miao people at the Zimei Festival and its elaborate Changzhuoyan banquet.
Part 3: Guizhou's Unique Routes
Guizhou is a fascinating destination for 'off-the-beaten-path' travelers. We visit Wanfenglin, a landscape of tens of thousands of karst peaks that looks like a natural masterpiece. We also explore the Wanfo Temple, a sacred site inside a natural limestone cave, and Yikoutian, a hidden cave perfect for trekking and trying traditional liquor. In the Buyi village of Nahui, we enjoy the friendly atmosphere of a weekly market and a local specialty, Danchaofan (special fried rice with eggs). The trip ends in Yangdong Village, where people still farm with oxen on terraced fields. We witness a thrilling ox-fighting event, a traditional pastime for the villagers.
